The short answer

Can RTT really help with weight?

Yes. Diets fight symptoms. RTT® finds the belief that keeps food doing the job of soothing, hiding, or protecting you, and rewires it. Once the belief shifts, what you eat — and don't eat — shifts naturally.

What weight and emotional eating really is

Weight is rarely about willpower. Usually a part of you decided food was the safest comfort, or that being smaller wasn't safe at all.

RTT meets that part with respect and updates what it learned.

Signs you may be struggling with weight and emotional eating

  • Night eating, secret eating
  • Reaching for food when stressed or numb
  • Yo-yo weight cycles
  • Self-loathing that fuels more eating
  • Body shame that runs your life

Why weight isn't actually about willpower

If weight could be solved by knowing what to eat, almost everyone would already be at the weight they want. The information has never been more available. What hasn„t shifted is the part of you that reaches for food when you“re not hungry, that promises tomorrow, that keeps a layer of body between you and the world.

That part isn„t broken. It“s protecting you. Food may have become your reliable comfort when nothing else was reliable. A larger body may have become your safety after an experience that taught you being seen was dangerous. Restriction may have become how you earn the right to take up space. None of this is conscious – and none of it responds to another meal plan.

RTT® works with the part underneath. Once that part has a different way to feel safe, food becomes food again – and the body finds its natural balance without the war.

How food and weight struggles actually show up

Most clients don„t arrive saying “I don„t know what to eat“. They arrive saying 'I know exactly what to do and I still can„t do it“, or 'I lose weight and gain it all back', or 'I eat fine all day and undo it every night'.

  • Emotional eating – boredom, stress, loneliness, reward
  • Night eating after a „good“ day
  • Yo-yo cycles of restriction and overeating
  • Self-sabotage right when results start to show
  • Hating your body and using that hatred as „motivation“ that never lasts
  • Using food to manage feelings you don't yet have other tools for

Why diets keep failing – even good ones

Diets work on calories. Bodies work on safety. When your subconscious believes that weight loss equals being more visible (and visibility was unsafe), or that being smaller equals being unprotected (and protection was important), it will quietly sabotage any plan that succeeds.

RTT changes the safety equation. Once your subconscious has new evidence that you're safe at your natural weight, the body stops fighting the process.

What RTT does differently for weight

RTT combines hypnotherapy, regression, parts work and habit-rewiring in one session. We find the original moment food became more than food – comfort, reward, punishment, armour – and we update the role you assigned to it.

We also work with body image: not to force you to love a body you don't, but to neutralise the inner voice that has been at war with you. From a neutral baseline, real change becomes possible.

A typical RTT session for weight

Sessions run 90 to 120 minutes online. We map your specific pattern – when, what, why, what you feel right before, what you feel right after. Then we move into hypnosis with you in control.

We visit the origin scenes of the food-as-something-else pattern, update the meaning, install a new relationship with food and body, and record a personalised 21-day audio.

The 21-day audio for weight

Weight patterns are deeply somatic habits. Listening before sleep for 21 days lets the new pattern install at the level where the old one lived – beneath conscious choice.

Clients often notice the change first as „the urge wasn“t even there' rather than 'I successfully resisted'.

Results timeline

Week one: the emotional volume around food drops; hunger and fullness become more readable.

Month one: the old patterns either don't fire or are much easier to step out of. The body begins to respond.

Three to six months: a steady, sustainable trajectory toward your natural weight – without the war.

When weight work needs more than RTT alone

If you have an active eating disorder (see our dedicated eating disorders page), please seek specialist medical and psychological care first – RTT can complement that care later but should not replace it.

If there are medical or hormonal factors at play, RTT works alongside, not instead of, medical investigation.

RTT vs other approaches to weight

MethodStrengthsLimitsWhat RTT does differently
Diets / meal plansProvide structure and short-term results.Don't address the subconscious driver; high regain rate.RTT works with the driver so the eating change becomes sustainable.
Weight-loss medicationCan produce significant short-term loss.Doesn't change the relationship with food; weight often returns if stopped.RTT changes the underlying pattern so the relationship is different long-term.
Personal trainingStrength, fitness, accountability.Exercise alone rarely shifts entrenched emotional-eating patterns.RTT addresses the eating side, complementing physical work.
Generic hypnosisRelaxing, sometimes shifts surface habits.Without regression and belief change, results often fade.RTT integrates regression, belief change and the 21-day audio.

What the research says about hypnotherapy for weight

  • 01Multiple meta-analyses show hypnotherapy enhances weight-loss outcomes when added to behavioural intervention, with effects sustained at follow-up.
  • 02Emotional and binge eating respond well to subconscious-level work because they are not knowledge problems but regulation problems.
  • 03Body-image neuroscience shows that self-perception is plastic and shifts with consistent new internal narratives.
  • 04Pre-sleep audio listening leverages neuroplasticity to consolidate new eating patterns more reliably than waking willpower.
  • 05RTT was developed by Marisa Peer, whose work has included extensive practice with food, body image and weight.

FAQ

Will RTT make me lose weight automatically?+

RTT changes the subconscious drivers behind eating. Weight follows when the drivers change. It is a behaviour-change intervention, not a metabolic intervention.

What if I„ve tried everything?+

Most clients have. That“s often exactly the point at which RTT is most useful, because it reaches the layer the other approaches couldn't.

Can RTT help with binge eating?+

Yes – binge eating responds very well to RTT because it is rooted in emotional regulation patterns, not in lack of knowledge.

Will I be able to enjoy food normally?+

Yes. The goal is not restriction – it is a normal, peaceful relationship with food where you eat when hungry, stop when satisfied, and food stops carrying emotional weight.

Do I have to want to lose weight?+

No. Some clients come for peace with food and body image, not weight loss. Both are valid goals.

How many sessions?+

Most clients need 1–3 sessions. Multi-layered patterns sometimes need more, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Will the change last?+

When the subconscious driver is genuinely updated and the 21-day audio is used, yes – most clients report lasting change.

Do sessions happen online?+

Yes – all sessions are over Zoom.
